Abstract
The universities contribute to economic development in many different ways, among them, the publication of scientific papers. The relationship between this academic effort and the one carried out by companies, in the form of patents, should be one priority for policy makers. The aim of this article is the analysis of the contribution of universities to the research in the field of food science and its comparison with the technological innovations generated by agrifood sector companies. The work has been done for all European regions, but with particular attention to Spain and Andalusia. The results reveal a large research effort on the side of universities, but a little relationship with the innovation generated by businesses in Spanish regions.
