Abstract

Chronic meningitis is inflammation of the meninges that results in anomalies in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) that last for at least one month. The most common aetiologies of chronic meningitis are infectious, autoimmune and neoplastic. This review aims to present the current knowledge on the aetiology, the course and the diagnostic and therapeutic management of the disease. We review the most common aetiologies of chronic meningitis. However, despite technological advances, the aetiology of a third of patients with the disease has still not been clarified. This reflects the diagnostic challenge that this syndrome poses to physicians. Fortunately, most patients with chronic idiopathic meningitis have a relatively good prognosis.
