Abstract

Sexual minorities continue to face situations of homophobic discrimination and harassment today. This causes mental health to deteriorate, with high levels of anxiety and depression. Objective: to find out the levels of resilience, perceived emotional intelligence, anxiety and depression in a sample of homosexual and bisexual people, as well as to find out the explanatory and/or predictive capacity of resilience and emotional intelligence on the levels of anxiety and depression. Methods: the sample is composed of a total of 139 homosexual or bisexual people, who were administered the Wagnild and Young Resilience Scale (1993), the Trait Meta-Mood Scale-24 (TMMS-24) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Results: high levels of anxiety and depression were found in the sample studied, and both resilience and the emotional intelligence dimensions of attention, clarity and emotional repair were found to be predictors of lower levels of anxiety and depression. Conclusions: it is considered crucial to include intervention programmes that promote resilience and emotional intelligence in Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual people, in order to prevent psychopathological disorders
