Abstract

A study of the social change experienced by the controversial concept of masculinity from the persepctive of freedom of conscience and identity. A dynamic global hermeneutic realised through the conceptualization of three socio-historical models of masculinity: the classic, the traditional and the idenditary, that enables the analysis of masculine representation through cinema and its discourse in film through the means of cinema about antiquity and of Spanish cinema from the 1960’s. A destructruing of symbolic and declarative elements that permits us to reconstruct a meaning that moves between social ideology, the spectator and the film, in order, by this means, to be able to decipher the reality of man represented in each period, in each work, putting in relief the explicit or tacit ideology and the patterns of social behaviour observed in the different represented models of masculinity. Interpretive hypothesis that starts from the consideration that there exists a combination of models of masculinity visualized on the screen, thus demythologizing the concept of Society as an immutable truth in relation to our past and its values.
