Resumo

This Doctoral Thesis aims to extend the knowledge regarding the motivational processes developed by students during physical education classes, attempting to assess the incidence of the context of physical education to promote certain attitude and adaptive behaviors. The sample was formed by 32 physical education teachers, as well as their students from 1st and 2nd ESO, ranging in age from 12 to 16 years old. Respecting results analysis, three instruments were firstly validated with the aim to examine the variables included in the study. Secondly, using structural equation model, the incidence of motivational processes to explain certain attitudes and positive behaviors during physical education classes, such as enjoyment, boredom, importance given to physical education, development of positive behaviors and intention to be physically active, was tested. Lastly, the research shows the incidence of a training program with physical education teachers leading to the development of support strategies to autonomy, competence and relatedness, demonstrating the positive effects promoted in students´ motivation, as well as the intention to be physically active. Hence, the current work corroborates the importance of the physical education context to enhance extracurricular sport practice, and therefore, avoid the sedentary in the adolescent.
