Résumé

Healthcare workers that work in homes for the aged are exposed to daily suffering of patients who suffer chronic diseases, terminal ones or dementia. This fact, next to the working environment, can lead to a high emotional stress on workers, that may develop pathologies such as compassion fatigue and burnout. Therefore, we wanted to determine the prevalence of compassion fatigue among social and healthcare workers working in homes for the aged in Extremadura, and identify whether there was a relationship between this one and burnout. For this, a cross-sectional, descriptive and analytic study carried out. 227 social and healthcare workers completed the consent form, the sociodemographic, working and personal resources variable survey and two validated scales: the ProQOL and MBI. Data were coded in Microsoft Office Excel 2013 and analyzed with SPSS version 21. Significant differences observed for values of p = <0.05 were considered. We conclude that the social and healthcare workers working in homes for the aged in Extremadura had a prevalence of compassion fatigue of 34.4% and a 4,9% prevalence of burnout. Similarly, it was found statistically significant (p= 0.008) than compassion fatigue and burnout have a positive relationship in all its dimensions, for those affected by one of them, tended to present the another. Our results support us for further research in the field of psychosocial intervention and prevention professionals in homes for the aged.
