Abstract

Performance-related musculoskeletal disorders (PRMD) are highly prevalent and music schools should support effective prevention measures. The first aim of this study was to determine the students' health status in music higher education in Extremadura region in Spain, early during the 2014-2015 academic year. It also aimed to analyze prevention and Health Education (HE) models in music Conservatories and private institutions with university status, within the framework of the Organic Law of Education (LOE) in 2014 and to compare it with those into the previous legislative framework (LOGSE) in 2008. Conclusions: The analysis of music students' health in Extremadura reveals a high prevalence of performance-related musculoskeletal disorders (PRMD). Results of this research show that prevention should be done from an early age and through effective programs with qualified professionals. Nearly all centers offer HRS, but there are pronounced differences about mandatory status, type of subjects, content and criteria for selection of teachers in charge of them. Although the institutions are beginning to be sensitized to include training on injury prevention as a need, findings reveal that such measures do not seem to be effective enough. Further studies evaluating the adequacy of measures undertaken by the institutions are needed.
