Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the most prevalent chronic degenerative diseases and represents a major public health problem worldwide. Ever since the patient is diagnosed requires a widespread treatment to prevent complications. The diabetic foot is a complication of DM that generates health care costs, and it is the indicator of lower limb amputations. The main aim of the present study was the development, implementation and evaluation of a complex educational intervention on diabetic foot in the area of Plasencia. The project addresses one hand training in foot self-care for people with DM and secondly the training of nurses in podiatric exploration techniques. To evaluate the overall project has been designed different quality indicators of structure, process and results. Regarding the results is important to highlight the increased level of knowledge after surgery both patients and professionals. All professionals involved in this educational program acquire skills and know podiatric examination quality standards in terms of risk assessment foot. 91.67% of attendees increased knowledge and 78.57% learned foot self-care activities. All professionals involved in this educational program acquire skills on podiatric examination and knowledge in quality standards of risk assessment foot. The complex educational intervention was evaluated positively. The implementation of this work in collaboration with the staff of Extremadura Public Health Service has provided a significant increase in knowledge of the techniques and skills of self-care. It is necessary to implement a structured program of injury prevention of diabetic foot, evaluating the effectiveness of these preventive strategies. The podiatrist must assume this commitment in a multidisciplinary team environment.
