Abstract

The work presented aims to investigate the path of those who leave early education and training and then decide to return again to the education system. The analysis is done from a gender perspective that allows a better understanding of the behavior of personal, social and economic factors that influence the abandonment and return to studies. To obtain information, in addition to a sex---role inventory adapted to the Spanish population, used to extract the gender variable and include it in the analysis of the data set, we used a questionnaire with closed questions and open questions like narratives. Data were obtained from 457 students of Extremadura, with a percentage of 61.7% men and 38.3% women, aged mostly in the range of 15 to 24 years. For data analysis it has been developed a mixed approach: quantitative statistical analysis in which we have used descriptive and inferential techniques, and on the other hand, different techniques of textual analysis and content analysis, contingency analysis or graphical representation in the form of networks. Among the results we emphasize that the lack of motivation towards studies appears as the main cause of educational neglect, for both women and men, although the difference between the sexes lies in the paths followed after leaving school. Regarding the reasons for return, we highlight the differences in family support received by women when resuming studies or the influence of higher labor expectations in men.
