Abstract

The retail distribution is one of the economic and social activities of major importance in the life of a city, and this is even more important when the city is situated close to an international border. Furthermore, the social changes in recent decades have had a strong impact on this activity, and especially in cities where because of weakening of borders, virtualization consumption and the economy, breaking the times barriers, ethnic diversity, etc. the commerce has a special significance. In this study, we investigate the impact of those changes on a specific case: the city of Badajoz, situated on the border between Spain and Portugal. Focusing in both the corporate dimension to the work, as well as the perception by consumers. As the city almost do not have research on trade, this study will involve a systematic analysis of the sector in the city, its current status as a result of business decisions of the agents involved; social transformations due to globalization which in turn causes atavistic adaptation and modernization of the system; policy and legislative decisions.
