Abstract
Among the neoplastic breast pathologies, and due to their behavior, the intraductal papilloma presents a great discussion among the facultative ones. Although this entity is considered a benign lesion, it presents a high rate of recurrence in form of malignant tumors. Our hypothesis is that there are two distinct subtypes, those associated with a high risk of malignant recurrence and those that behave as benign lesions without risk of relapse and therefore differential markers could be found. The expression of COL11A1, estrogen and progesterone receptors and the presence of HPV were determined in 52 cases of solitary intraductal papillomas. The results demonstrated that COL11A1 expression coupled with high estrogen receptor may be a highly sensitive biomarker for predicting malignant relapse of intraductal papilloma and may be used as an indicator factor for prevention programs.
