Abstract

This doctoral dissertation examines how university student´s individual characteristics and Institucional context shapes their intention whether to become entrepreneurs and start a business. Theorizing uses the theory of planned behavior, constructed by Ajzen and elaborated by Goleman, Cherniss, Fernández-Pérez, and others. The conceptual framework is used to survey 1907 university students in the private Tecnológico de Monterrey and in two public universities in Mexico. Structural equations modeling is applied for testing hypotheses about influences of emotional intelligence on entrepreneurial intentions, in the context of entrepreneurial eco-systems in universities. In both private and public universities, students´ emotional competencies are found to promote attitude and self-efficacy and, in turn, entrepreneurial intention, and also employment and perceived value of entrepreneurship. Emotional competence enhances entrepreneurial intention more in private than in public universities.
