Abstract

Since 1985 when the Jarrat Report was published, great efforts have been directed at a search for valid indicators of institutional assessment of universities. In this study we present a differential analysis of criteria and indicators, centering our attention on the types, construction and use of the latter in institutional assessment of universities. A set of indicators and variables is also proposed, organized on the basis of the functions of the university (education, research and services), the type of indicator (context, presage, process, product) and the type of measurement to be taken (quantitative or qualitative).
