Resum

Introduction: Admission to college is a process of transition and adaptation to the new students. This period is full of social, educational and personal changes, where students have to face new educational methods and high standards. All this makes the newly admitted students may feel a lack of control over the environment and acquiring new habits that eventually can cause health problems. Objective: Knowing and comparing the degree of stress noticed by the students of the first year of the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Cadiz, Cordoba, Huelva and Seville, so that we can propose new systems for coping with stress, guidance and / or mentoring. Methodology: Cross-sectional observational study, of the novice students of the Faculty of Nursing at western Andalusia (Cadiz, Cordoba, Huelva and Seville). We surveyed a total of 617 students, with a response rate of 95.66%. For data collection we used three questionnaires: Questionnaire stress noticed by young students (Iglesias Parra, 2011), Scale of Satisfaction with Life (Arce, 1994) and specific original questionnaire of sociodemographic and health data (built ad hoc, numbers containing 15 questions about the sociodemographic profile of the student body). It conducted a descriptive and differential analysis of the study variables. Result: Increased stress levels in the first year students in the Degree of Nursing is appreciated. Variables such as "being a woman", "living away from the family", "no scholarships", "work", "have medical history" or "not attending tutoring" increase stress levels. The situations that most concern the newly admitted university students are "coping with exams" (48.1%) or "the amount of work I have to face" (38.1%). Consequently, the stressor is the "academic stress" (47.8%) and less stressful "feelings of loneliness" (28.7%). Also, the majority of students (60.9%) refer satisfied with their life. Students enrolled at the University of Seville is the one that feels most satisfied. Conclusion: The entrance to the university produces a significant increase of stress in nursing students. Such stress can affect their health, quality of life and their academic performance. Further studies are necessary in this line of research, to know the possible causes related to this situation and design prevention strategies that can improve the health of students.
