Abstract

The main objective of this Ph. D. is to make a Deep study of the private inspection activity to the dangerous cargo ships by oil majors. Also named as vetting, these inspections began in 1993 through SIRE Program of OCIMF and passing the years, they have been implemented to other tradings. The vetting inspections are a very important tool for maritime pollution prevention (accidental or operative). In addition, it is analysed the influence of vetting in the maritime safety, merchant ships fleet management, economy and several legal aspects of the inspection activity.
