Abstract

The main objective of this work is to present a proposal of the functional flexibility construct and also a model to measure it. In doing so, we will try to clarify this concept because of the lack of consensus about its terminology in the literature. In the first part of this work, we discuss and justify the need of certain level of functional flexibility of human resource management systems to improve organization's capacity for adaptation to current environments. From this point of view, this capacity is considered as a strategic asset or, even, as a relevant source of competitive advantage for organizations to compete efficiently. Finally, as a result of our theoretical analysis, we propose a new functional flexibility construct and a measurement model to study this topic deeper.
