Abstract

The close relationship between tourism and technological innovation has generated a significant range of possibilities for tourism companies and tourist destinations in its efforts to provide a richer experience to tourists. In this sense, augmented reality has become one of the most important technological advances in recent years. Augmented reality is an effective and relevant communication tool through which it is possible to publicize tourism resources; hence its use in this sector and particularly its application to cultural tourism has become an added value to raise awareness of the historical and cultural heritage of a destination. Given these considerations, in this paper we analyse the possibilities arising from the use of this technology in tourism, focusing on its application to cultural tourism. We will complete this paper with a case study in which the use of augmented reality system in several Andalusian tourist destinations will be analysed.
