Abstract

This paper about Spanish sacred rhetoric in sixteenth century focuses on the chapter dedicated to the use of rhetorical progymnasmata in preacher's education in De Theologo, seu de ratione studii theologici libri IV by Andreas Hyperius and De recte formando studio theologico libri quattuor by Fray Lorenzo de Villavicencio. The similarity between both texts, easy to explain because Fray Lorenzo copied to a great extent the work by Hyperius, offers a good example about the influence of protestant preaching treatises, prohibited in Inquisition indexes, on the books produced in Spain during the reign of Philip II.
