Abstract

The Mar Menor lagoon (Murcia) is under a process of accelerated environmental degradation that is producing a substantial reduction of human welfare. The reasons for this phenomenon are, among others, an inadequate interpretation of the territorial scope that should be subject to the public policies. The Mar Menor should be identified as a complex area deeply interlinked in their socioeconomic and physical-natural subsystems, constituting a true socioecological system. The Integrated Coastal Zone Management Strategy of the Mar Menor contributes to a better territorial approach to the problems of the lagoon. And it has designed a new methodology based on the assessment of ecosystem services and the participation of the various territorial actors in the process of diagnosing the problems that the new strategy must respond.
