Abstract

At least, two factors were required to establish and consolidate urban oligarchies, particularly those which controlled local governments. First a legislation, which defined the ways of access to the power; for that, it was essential that the Crown disposed of town councillar positions. And second, the practices, which defined the limitations of reproductions of the system. The different methods for transferring a post worked in this way. In this paper and following highlighted factors, we study the constitution and evolution of urban oligarchy in local government in Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz) during XVI and XVIII centuries.
