Abstract
Ammianus Marcellinus, an ancient author of an excellent self-taught training, criticizes many of the principal political personages and soldiers that appear in his Res gestae on account of their lack of education and culture. With this critique intends to assault the mores easing, to censure the upstarts of humble origin that occupy high state charges, to underline his own romanitas (and that of emperor Julian) and be linked to the senatorial aristocracy that form his auditory.
