Abstract

In the proposal for the «Estatuto de Cataluña» passed by the Catalan parliament on 30 of September 2005, article 6 established the conditions in which the two official languages (Catalan and Castilian) should be used in that autonomous region once the «Estatuto» was passed. A brief study of the press was carried out prior to the modification of the proposal by the Catalan parliament in the «Comisión Constitucional del Congreso de los Diputados» (Constitutional Commission of the Congress of Deputies), using the reports appearing in the national newspapers (El País and El Mundo) published in Madrid between 1 January-15 February 2006. It was concluded that both content and forms differed considerably. In El Mundo there was a complete news blackout and reporting was limited to an analysis of Catalan institutions; in El País, although similar arguments were employed, pens were used as swords,
