Abstract
The continuous migration of the sand spit in Guadiaro River provokes the closing of its estuary. This fact involves a serious problem of water eutrofization and mortality within flora and fauna species due to the lack of water renovation. In order to investigate the morphodynamic spit evolution, 7 long-shore and cross-shore topographic profile levellings of the spit have been performed within a 5 month period. A meticulous volumetric analysis of the field data has been developed through Empirical Orthogonal Functions (E.O.F). After severe erosion processes (up to 5,73 m3/ml·day) and accumulative events (up to 8,92 m3/ml·day), this method explains the spatial and temporal profiles evolution noticeably. The wave action is determinant within the study and understanding of the three-dimensional spit evolution.
