In this work we have studied the influence of the chemical-thermal pretreatment of carbon monoliths on their behaviour as filters to remove o-xilene like volatile organic compounds in gaseous phase. Integral carbon honeycomb monoliths have been prepared by means of extrusion methods conventionally used for ceramic materials. The activated filters show a good adsorption capacity, high thermal stability and possibility of regeneration at moderate conditions. In addition, a preoxidation treatment before carbonizing and activating the carbon multiplies the adsorbed amount by a factor of 2.5. A detailed characterization by using instrumental techniques such as N2 physisorption, mercury porosimetry, scanning electron microscopy and infrared spectroscopy has allowed relating the above finding with the textural properties of the monoliths, especially their microporosity, rather than with changes in the chemical nature of the carbon surface
