Abstract
This research tries basically to study the Arabic and Berber vocabularies devoted to the caves and the caverns in the Medieval Maghreb from a diachronical point of vue. The article is based on a critical review of historical, geographical, hagiographical and genealogical sources as well as the Ibadit texts and the modern bibliography devoted to geography and ethnography. The article tries to underline the importance of historical linguistics and historical geography for a better understanding of the informations connected with oronymy, models of settlement and cults.
