Abstract

In the knowledge age, local development is directly related to the ability of territories to meet the challenges of a globalized and competitive world. Social innovation which is primarily based on the use of endogenous resources is one of the key ways through which this ability finds its expression. Although studies on this phenomenon – which can take different forms depending on the economic, cultural and social characteristics and conditions of each territory – are recent, because of their practical impact the interest of researchers around the world is increasing at a high rate. This research, using bibliometric analysis techniques, focuses on the field of existing scientific production centered on explaining how Social Innovation is produced and how it contributes to the territorial development. As one of the results of the study, four thematic groups have been identified – Social Economy, Local Government, Strengthening territorial capacities and Theoretical Development of Social and Territorial Innovation – what generates practical and theoretical impact in the field of research on the local development, making so a contribution to the scientific progress on the issue.
