Abstract

Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is a frequent and potentially serious disease. It is a priority to identify the severity of these patients upon their arrival in the emergency department to decide on the ideal place to apply the treatment, whether ambulatory, inpatient facility or ICU. To do this, we use scales that allow to objectively establish the probability of death of a patient with CAP, and, in this way, to estimate the possibility of hospital admission and to choose the type of treatment that is most appropriate according to the severity. The most used ones are the scale of Fine or PSI and the CURB-65 scale. Scales such as SMART-COP or SCAP are used to assess ICU admission, with the 2007 ATS-IDSA criteria being the most commonly used criteria.
