Resum

The crisis of the transit of the XIX century to the XX generated a debate about the situation of Spain that developed in a concrete way in the so-called “Regenerationism”, an intellectual movement that sought to reflect on the causes of the negative panorama of the country. Regeneracionismo had its reflection in the subjects developed in the Zarzuela, especially in the denominated “chico gender”. This influence will be analyzed through the theme of six significant works by Gerónimo Giménez, Tomás Bretón, Manuel Fernández Caballero, Federico Chueca and Ruperto Chapí. They contain criticisms of the oligarchies and their cacique practices, denunciations of illiteracy that affected a large part of the population, an expression of discontent over the calls to fight in the Cuban war and other issues that were the center of discussion of the Regenerationist intellectuals.
