Abstract

his article analyses the Selectae sententiae (Salamanca?, 1557) by Pedro Vélez de Guevara (1529-1591). We seek to show that this work reflects the ideology of the Porch in matters of psychology, ethics and cosmology which, in turn, have been appropriated from Cicero who shares his stoic inclination with the contemporary generation of humanists-magistrates (Pibrac, Montaigne, L’Hospital). We also demonstrate that his stoicism is at the service of Christianism. We finally conclude that this work represents a stage in the development of neostoicism, culminating in Justus Lipsius in the eighties.
