Resumen

The hydrodynamic activity forced by the Mediterranean outflow currents in the Culf of Cadiz through the Strait of Gibraltar is the main controlling factor in the sediment short-term erosion/ transport/deposition processes in the slope. Two remarkable features can be mentioned to understand the effect o f the bottom currents on the erosion/transport/deposition processes along the Gulf of Cadiz: (!) canyons, valleys and deeps, and (2) sediment drift bodies. Submarine canyons and valleys are distributed mainly in the north-eastern area. They are incised in a very hierarchical way mainly along the shelf break and slope off The Algrave, forming a well developed drainage system. Deeps are positioned seaward Faro to Cadiz shelfbreak. Two main deeps are incised in the Faro Drift: Alvarez Cabral up in the north and Diego Cao in the central sector of the drift. We describe in this paper the morphoestructural signature of the Diego Cao Deep in relation to estructural constarains and bottom current patterns inferred from very new high resolution seismic data recorded along the Algarve (Portugal) and Cádiz (Spain) margin. Data for description were provided by 3.5 kHz and Sparker 4.500 joules. Navigation was accomplished with GPS.
