Résumé

The present work designs and applies a method to obtain two management variables using video imagery in two beaches of Bizcayan coast: the calculation of the total affluence of beach users in La Arena Beach and rip current location in Bakio Beach. Firstly, beach user quantification is obtained developing a detection tool, which is based on images captured from video cameras, that classifies the pixels of a region of interest in “sand” or “person”. Afterwards, the calibration is done using manual counting. Rip currents location is estimated visually followed by a data validation according to registers of rescues during the study period. The results give information about the number of users in La Arena for 2012 summer season and the risk zones in Bakio Beach for 2011 summer season. These data are fundamental to improve beach security and permit managers to take specific management programs.
