Abstract

A lot of authors highlight the need to involve students in their own learning process through self-assessment, peer assessment or co-assessment. The main objective of the experience presented here was to improve our teaching and learning method and systematize our assessment practice. To reach this objective the assessment process of the subject, which had as essential aspects the use of authentic assessment tasks and student involvement, was designed and used. Firstly, authentic assessment tasks were designed, activities linked with the professional world. The participation of students in their own assessment process through self-assessment and peer assessment was promoted. And thirdly, the assessment tools were electronically designed using EvalCOMIX. Students had to solve three cases in groups of 13 to 15 students. Then, they had to self-assess each case, and lastly every single student assessed three cases of their peers. Those cases were different from the ones they had solved; therefore the teachers provided the solved cases with the aim of helping them to evaluate their peers’ work.160 students of the subject Psychiatric nursing and mental health participated. In this experience first impressions of both teachers and students were obtained regarding their satisfaction, benefits and drawbacks of the participation of students in their own assessment process.
