Abstract

Transplants and the use of new drugs for cancer and autoimmune diseases are causing an increase in the number of immunocompromised patients. In addition to bacterial and fungal infections, viral infections are an important cause of morbidity and mortality in this group, but not enough attention is normally displayed in the differential diagnosis. Although it is easy to recognize VZV skin lesions, it is not the case with most viral infections, so if there is clinical suspicion should be used appropriate diagnostic methods (PCR, biopsy). Should be assessed: type of underlying disease, previous serological status, treatment given, chronological pattern involving well defined periods with possibility of delayed symptoms (PML, posttransplantation lymphoproliferative disorder) and the association of indirect effects.
