In Galicia, the long period of time which spans from the start of the 16th century until the late 18th century is known as “Séculos Escuros” (Dark Centuries) and it is mainly characterized by the abandonment of everything that implies the claim of Galician identity, motivated by the defeat suffered by Galician nobility, specially after the Catholic Monarchs, who established in Galicia the language and the customs from the Court. It is in the middle of the 19th century when an intellectual movement known as “Rexurdimento” arises in Galicia, taking place simultaneously to the Central European nationalism, and determined to recover the Galician identity, counting with Marcial del Adalid and Casto Sampedro as the most representative composers of said movement.
