Abstract

A tool to estimate potential impacts, at regional level, associated with storm events (CRAF1) is applied to Ria Formosa barrier system. Both overwash- and erosion-related hotspots were identified using as indicators the overwash depth and the dune foot retreat, respectively. Because such processes are related to more than one physical parameter, the response approach was used in identifying the return periods. The method uses as input parameters wave data from the Faro buoy, together with land use and census. Results highlighted the urban area of the Praia de Faro as a primary hotspot for both processes in agreement with observations.
