Abstract

Travel books allow readers to learn about those places described. Although Spain was not part of the 18 th century itinerary named Grand Tour, it aro used the interest of some travel ers who travelled around the country in order to learn something about that unknown lan d. These intrepid travel ers left proof of ev erything they found out in travel books, stories, guides, etc. Ireland was not in the Grand Tour route, therefore there is not much literature on it. Nevertheless, there was a n adventurer, Richard T wiss, who travelled through Spain as well as through Irela nd at the end of 18 th century. Twiss, of English origin, was brought up in Holland but devoted his life to travel and to recount his experiences in the most important cities in the continent. Likewise, he went to Spain and Portugal and Ireland, with the re sult of the publication of Travels through Portugal and Spain in 1772 and 1773 y Tour in Ireland in 1775 . The aim of this paper is to explore the image offered by Twiss about both countries in referen ce to culture, society, customs and traditions and main cities showing their similarities and differences.
