Abstract

The purpose of this project is to study several texts from the column, Calentita: Gibraltar’s National Dish. El telephone conversation de Cynthia y Cloti, included in the daily magazine, Panorama, with the intention of analising how the Gibraltarian linguistic variety is used as an instrument of spreading Gibraltarian identity in times of political tension. Two significant periods of the Gibraltarian history will be taken to do so: the years of the closing of the border (1969-1982) and the current situation that has emerged by Brexit (2016-). The methodology that will be used is included within the sociolinguistic branch: concretely, a study of the linguistic attitudes that are expressed throughout its complex system of code-switching and its diverse communicative strategies is proposed. The aim is to make an analogy between both periods and to check the hypothesis previously mentioned
