Zusammenfassung

This article seeks to reflect on the importance that the theme of suicide has on Elena Quiroga Abarca’s novelistic work (1921-1995). Despite having been one of the references in the Spanish literature of the mid-twentieth century, specifically among women writers, her figure is hardly claimed today by literary critics. Suicide has become a literary theme that, from the viewpoint of women writers, offers a space for the vindication of the obscured truths around its medical understanding, which inevitably links it to a madness to which women have been culturally linked as a subordinate subject. In this respect, this work aims to offer new possibilities for reading Presente profundo (1973) as a feminist and fragmentary discourse that denies the monolithic truths of suicide and glimpses a whole series of social, psychological and emotional reasons for Daria and Blanca’s deaths
