Abstract
The city of Cadiz lost its archives when it was plundered by the English Navy in 1596. This paper attemps to reconstruct the foundation of the Diocese of Cadiz through the study, translation and critical edition of two papal bulls issued by Clement VI: Gaudemus et exultamus issued on 30th April 1344, whereby the Diocese of Algeciras was founded and united with that of cadiz, and In apostolice dignitatis specula, whereby he commissioned the Archbishops of Santiago and Toledo to endow the diocese with canons and beneficiaries.
