Zusammenfassung

This paper focuses on the compilation of a small corpus to satisfy the demands of specialised languages as is the case of Maritime English. The background to this paper is depicted in the first place by briefly exploring the existence of both written and spoken corpora as applied to specialised languages, and then by outlining what Maritime English communications are for a better understanding of the context in which such specialised corpus has been created. Next, the compilation process of ECOMARS, a corpus which contains real and spontaneous spoken instances of maritime communications English, is discussed in detail: its design, requirements, speakers, and the collection, recording and treatment of the data gathered. Finally, some of the researching goals and pedagogical applications of ECOMARS within the field of Maritime English are put forward as a potential contribution to corpus linguistics studies.
