Resumo

In April 2003, after having an urgent archaeological excavation been carried out, a late Roman period sarcophagus dated in the 5th century A.D. was found in El Puerto de Santa María municipality (Cádiz, Spain). The funerary frame, built with a mortar of lime, sand and amphora fragments rubblework, had an outer covering formed by five conchiferous limestone slabs. The skeletal remains of a 24-28-year-old male were found in a late roman sarcophagus, having a body height of 1.73 - 1.74 metres, being right hander and showing a caucasoid osteometric pattern. As the most relevant paleopathological condition it is studied an intertrochanteric oblique fracture of the right proximal femur, with coxa vara deformity, severe shortening of the limb length (4.7 cm), and traumatic myositis ossificans in the área of the iliacus muscle insertions. It is also studied an osteoarthritic degenerativo lesión in the left radius, as well as a periapical abscess, and some markers of occupational stress in ulna and ribs.
