Th e transfer of the head of the fl eets of the Indies and the Tabla and Juzgado of the Indies from Seville to Cádiz in 1679-1680, he had a character, not only local or regional, but international. Aft er more than a century and a half of permanence in the port of Seville, and the long debates and pressures between one city and another to retain the mercantile monopoly of Spain with America, the change represented a triumph for the Cádiz cause, its commerce and its merchants. Th is study tries to know detailed the diff erent causes which combined to make possible the transfer, especially during the second half of the seventeenth century, both purely natural, as well as political, technical or social. We will also analyze its fi nal culmination in 1717, when this transfer was also joined by the two most important commercial institutions of the Carrera de Indias: la Casa de la Contratación and the Consulate.
