Abstract

Noise pollution continues to be one of the main concerns of citizens, and its reduction has become, increasingly, an objective of European Union legislation and a priority for research. In highly urbanized areas, the noise exceeds, in general, the admissible limit values and desirable guide values, while increasing the subjective noise pollution suffered by the population. In response to this unsatisfactory situation, the European Union proposes policies for the management of environmental noise, setting two main objectives for 2020. On the one hand, avoiding the harmful effects of exposure to noise from all sources, and on the other, protecting the quiet areas. Currently, there is an increase due to the interest in quiet areas. This includes, normative references to «areas of good sound quality», such as attempts to define urban quiet areas and «calm maps», norm projects on soundscapes and financing of projects whose objective is the study of sound landscapes and the quiet areas. This thesis is based on the methodological approach proposed by the European project QUADMAP (QUiet Areas Definition and Management in Action Plans), which takes, in turn, as a reference a practical study carried out by DEFRA (Department for Enviroment Food and Rural Affairs), being its fundamental objective, to generate a deeper practical knowledge about the IDENTIFICATION, EVALUATION AND HIERARCHY of the QUIET AREAS in the territory of Andalusia, that allows to design a strategy of simple and effective management for the own city councils.
