Abstract

Defining the geometry of the hydrogeological systems involves aspects such as the morphology of the bottom of the aquifer, the distribution of the lithological formations, tectonic compartmentalization and other morphostructural aspects that are of major importance to understand their functioning and to achieve a better management of groundwater resources. The present work deepens the current knowledge of the geometry the Benalup aquifer, a hydrogeological system of detri- tic-calcareous nature that is located in the Barbate river basin, and is subject to management problems. For this purpose, geophysical techniques (seismic and electrical) were applied in combination with the analysis of the Digital Terrain Model (DTM) and the information obtained from lithological columns from existing boreholes. As a result, the thickness distribution of the aquifer and the volume of the groundwater reservoir were determined. In addition, several fracture systems that affect the aquifer and divide it into at least three subsectors of independent functioning were identified.
