Résumé

Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted infection with a worldwide distribution caused by herpes simplex virus type 2 and, to a lesser extent, type 1. It is characterized by recurrences, which can greatly affect the quality of life of people who experience them. There are two possible approaches to the disease: treatment of the episodes and its recurrences or chronic suppressive treatment. The varicella zoster virus causes two clinical diseases in human beings: the primary infection, consisting of varicella, and the reactivation of the virus in adult ages, known as herpes zoster. The first tends to be a mild disease in childhood and treatment with antiviral agents is only indicated in those older than 12 years of age or high-risk patients. The most common complication of the herpes zoster is postherpetic neuralgia and the most feared is ophthalmic involvement, due to its possible sequelae. Treatment with antiviral agents is especially indicated for patients older than 50 years or the at-risk population. Treatment must be individualized in the rest of cases.
