Résumé
In the Early Modern Era, the use of images as an indispensable part of natural and scientific reports led to the development of a culture with its own perceptions of reality, derived from such representations. Because of the diffusion enjoyed by the six-volume work of Georg Braun and Franz Hogenberg, titled «Civitates Orbis Terrarum», this publication had an essential role on the creation and dissemination of stereotypes of urban environments in 16th and early 17th centuries, through its representations of more than 500 cities around the world. Our goal is to achieve a closer approach to the vision of the urban world through the images of this work, but also the text, a part which is often neglected. Our approach is also based on a comparison between two cities with special attributes due to their coastal locations: Catania (Italy) and Cadiz (Spain).
