Abstract

In thisstudy, the results of management of the ice plant (Carpobrotus spp.) carried out by the Regional Environmental Council of Andalucia on Tarifa Island between 2008-2013 are presented. Aerial photographic analysis showed an exponential increase of the surface area invaded by the ice plant between 1977-2004. Thisincrease posed a seriousthreat to the wildlife of the island, which isincluded in the Strait of Gibraltar Natural Park and housesthe world'slargest population of Limonium emarginatum (VU), which is listed as vulnerable. This scenario prompted the Environmental Council to prioritize actions aimed at controlling the ice plant. Hand-pulling of ice plant led to the elimination of 556 tonnes and the recovery of a net area of approx. 2 hectares. As a consequence, the eradication of the ice plant on the island was achieved. The monitoring of biological indicators of the native plant community confirmed the recovery of the treated areas and highlights the importance of regular monitoring for effective control of this invasive species
