Zusammenfassung

We study the theory of dreams by Lucretius. We distinguish the semantic aspect (the truth or falsity of dreams) from the pragmatic aspect (their vital function). Epicureanism considers dreams true as psycho-physiological realities, but false in their real content, especially those dreams of apparitions of the deceased or of simulacra in dance. The Epicurean proposal is that dreams are triggered by stimuli, present or past, that condense into one point a multitude of moments that our semantic and operational memory accumulates. In a second part, the function of dreams and their interweaving with life is studied.
