Contacto lingüístico, actitudes e ideologías entre el español y el inglés. El caso de la prensa hispana de los estados unidos (1848-1899)

Abstract

The linguistic contact between English and Spanish in the United States is popularly known as Spanglish and it has been studied by Betti (2008, 2010), Lipski (2007, 2008), López García-Molins (2014, 2015 ), Moreno Fernández (2015), Otheguy et al. (2005, 2007) and Zentella (1981, 1982, 1985). However, these studies have focused on the synchronic aspect and they do not shed light on its historical origins. By carrying out this doctoral thesis I will analyse the historical configuration of the contact between English and Spanish in the press published by the Spanish-speaking communities (Mexican, Spanish and Cuban) in the second half of the nineteenth century. In order to do so, I will use the theoretical and methodological postulates of linguistic contact to unravel the patterns of this contact situation. Nevertheless, the linguistic attitudes and the linguistic ideologies will also be used as tools to understand the extralinguistic factors of this contact situation. The study of the historical configuration of Spanglish will allow to the understanding the current linguistic reality, the reason for many of the attitudes and ideologies that arise around Spanish and why it cannot be considered a minority language in the United States.
