Resumen

This investigation examines the landscape transformations in the inland sea of Chiloé (Chile) and the coastal edge that surrounds it and how these have impacted on a degradation of local cultural identities. To carry out the research, a methodology based on the Integrated Coastal Zones Management (ICZM) model is applied, with an approach of the problem from an interdisciplinary perspective, where both geographical and anthropological fields of knowledge are based on the same analytical discourse. The results illustrate a change in the way of interpreting the behavior of the sea, which began mainly in the 1980s with the emergence of the aquaculture industry. The impact generated is not only observed in the economy, but also in the marine ecosystems, the maritime landscape, the customs and the collective imaginations of the Chiloe population. In some cases, tradition and modernity seem to intermingle, giving rise to completely new practices. For this reason, although a decline in cultural values is detected, new cultural identities associated with the sea are also being established. In any case, given the loss of the geographic and identity singularity that characterizes the populations that live around the inland sea of Chiloé, the necessary policies or regulations have not been applied. Thus, the diagnosis proposed here is interesting to raise awareness among political stakeholders and promote the implementation of correct measures.
